Spade Drill Bits
Spade bits (also called paddle bits) have a flat blade with a center point for drilling large holes in wood. The simple geometry allows fast, economical hole drilling in construction and rough carpentry applications.
Design Characteristics
The flat blade cuts with sharpened edges on both sides. The center point positions the bit and pulls it into the material. Wide cutting action generates significant torque.
Speed and Feed
Spade bits operate at higher speeds than other large-diameter bits. The flat blade design clears chips efficiently when drilling through-holes but may require periodic withdrawal in deep holes.
Hole Quality
Spade bits produce functional but not finished holes. Exit side tearout is common without backing material. For cleaner holes, Forstner bits or hole saws may be more appropriate.
Extension Availability
Spade bits can be used with extensions to reach greater depths. The hex shank fits standard extensions, enabling drilling through multiple stacked framing members.
